I have a wooden instrument that has two holes, one on each end and 16 strings to each hole. what is this ?

I am under the impression that it is Russian. It is held like a guitar as the wearing tells. I think it may be classified as a Zither. I would like to know what it is, where it originated, any web sites that talk about it and how you play it
